Obverse description Central crowned royal cypher of Philip IV (PHILIPVS monogram) in the field, formed by interlaced letters beneath an ornate crown. The mint mark M or Mo appears to the left of the monogram. A partial Latin legend encircles the design along the irregular flan edge, though much of it is typically off-flan due to the cob (macuquina) striking method. The overall style is characteristic of the crude hammered cob coinage produced at the Mexico City Mint in the seventeenth century.
