Additional information

Guatemala's 1/2 real of 1872–73 was struck during the presidency of Miguel García Granados, whose liberal revolution the previous year had ousted the conservative government after two decades of clerical dominance. The new administration moved quickly to reform national institutions, and coinage reform was part of that broader program — though the decimal system Guatemala ultimately adopted would render these fractional reales obsolete within a few years.
