Obverse description The Hamburg civic arms — a white castle with three towers on a red field — displayed within an ornate oval cartouche, flanked by two rampant lion supporters standing on foliate scrollwork. Above the shield rises an elaborate trophy of crossed sceptres, fasces, and civic regalia surmounted by a crown. The mintmaster's initials P·B·M appear on a tablet below the shield, with the mint-warden's initials I·R beneath, and the date 16-95 split to either side. The circular legend MONETA AUREA CIVITATIS HAMBURGENSIS runs around the periphery, partially inverted at the base in keeping with the medal-alignment orientation.
