The "Moruroa" series, issued by the Institut d'émission d'outre-mer, takes its name from the atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago where France conducted 193 nuclear tests between 1966 and 1996. Naming a low-denomination aluminum circulation piece after a nuclear test site is a geopolitical peculiarity that went largely unremarked at the time of issue.
