Obverse description Central device depicts the coat of arms of French Polynesia in stylized relief, featuring a traditional Polynesian double-hulled canoe (pirogue) with a decorated hull band, set upon stylized ocean waves. Radiating lines fill the upper field, evoking sunrays. The design is rendered in a bold, graphic style with no peripheral legend.

Additional information

The CFP franc system, under which this piece circulates, was established in 1945 when France created separate currency zones for its Pacific territories to insulate them from postwar European monetary instability. The arrangement has outlasted every major overhaul of the French monetary system, surviving the franc's replacement by the euro on the mainland while the Pacific territories retained their own pegged currency — an outcome that was largely accidental, driven more by bureaucratic inertia than deliberate policy.
