Obverse description Central shield bearing the quartered arms of Scotland, featuring the rampant lion in the first and fourth quarters, within an irregularly shaped field typical of hammered coinage. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown. The surrounding legend, rendered in Latin, reads IACOB 6 D G R SCO, identifying James VI as King of Scots by the Grace of God. The lettering is in a characteristic late 16th-century Gothic style with abbreviation marks.
