Obverse description The crowned shield of the East India Company dominates the center of the obverse, displaying the quartered arms of the Company. The date 1809 appears in the exergue below the shield, while the denomination HALF PIE is inscribed above. A ribbon beneath the shield bears the Latin motto AUSP:REGIS & SENAT:ANGLIAE, meaning 'By the authority of the King and Parliament of England.' The entire device is enclosed within a raised toothed border.
