Reverse description The heraldic arms of Coventry occupy the central field, presented as a shield bearing a fortified tower or castle upon a landscape ground, with an elephant passant to the left of the tower supporting the composition. Atop the shield as crest stands a leopard or cat passant. The circular legend THE ARMS OF COVENTRY runs along the upper periphery, while the maker's inscription P. KEMPSON FECIT. appears in small lettering within the lower shield area. The date 17 97 is split across the lower exergue beneath the shield, flanked by the lower edges of the escutcheon.
