Obverse description Bare-headed, draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, her hair elaborately dressed and drawn back into a bun with a small floral ornament above the temple, engraved in the young-head portrait style by Leonard Charles Wyon. The legend VICTORIA D: G: BRITANNIAR: REG: F: D: curves along the upper periphery, while the date 1856 appears in the lower field beneath the bust. The border is composed of a fine inner beaded ring encircling the entire design. The portrait is rendered in high relief with considerable detail in the hair and drapery, consistent with the refined workmanship of the Royal Mint.
