| Obverse description | Central armorial design featuring a heraldic shield supported by two rearing horses as dexter and sinister supporters, the whole surmounted by a crest depicting a mermaid with arms raised. The motto legend PER MARE PER TERRA appears on a scroll in the lower exergue, rendered in raised Latin lettering. The entire composition is executed in high relief within a beaded border. The design closely follows the arms associated with trade and mercantile enterprise, typical of Canadian merchant token issues of the mid-19th century. |

| Reverse description | Central device depicts the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), shown suspended upside down by its bound legs from a ribbon or cord, a motif associated with St. John's, Newfoundland. The merchant's name R & I.S. RUTHERFORD arcs across the upper field, while ST. JOHN'S NEWFOUNDLAND curves along the lower periphery, all separated by two asterisks at the lateral points. The design is contained within a beaded border and the lettering is bold and well-struck, consistent with Boulton and Watt's Birmingham token production. |
