Obverse description The obverse presents a wholly typographic design enclosed within an olive or laurel wreath occupying the central field. Within the wreath, four lines of raised Latin lettering read DONALD & Co / STOCKING / MANUFACTURERS / WHOLESALE & RETAIL, identifying the issuing firm and its trade. A circular legend surrounds the wreath, reading PROMISSORY HALFPENNY PAYABLE AT NOTTINGm OR, abbreviated to indicate Nottingham as a place of redemption. The coin border is formed by a finely executed toothed or beaded rim consistent with late eighteenth-century Birmingham milled token production.
