J.W. Mears operated as a general merchant in Wellington during the late 1850s, a period when the chronic shortage of official British coinage in New Zealand forced traders to commission their own copper tokens simply to make change. The colonial administration in London was slow to authorize a local currency, leaving commerce dependent on a patchwork of merchant-issued pieces whose legal standing was permanently ambiguous.
The dual Renniks references — R#355 and R#362 — indicate two distinct varieties exist for this issuer, likely differing in die details or edge treatment.
