Obverse description A three-masted sailing ship depicted in full sail occupies the central field, rendered in fine detail with rigging and a rope hanging from the bowsprit. The vessel is shown underway on stylised waves, viewed from the starboard side. A wreath of leaves frames the lower portion of the design. The circular legend 'LEITH HALFPENNY' runs along the upper periphery, flanked by small asterisks.

Reverse description A classical figure of Britannia is depicted seated facing left at centre, holding an olive or palm branch in her outstretched left hand and an upright spear in her right. She is shown draped, with a shield bearing a wheel motif resting beside her. The date 1797 appears in the exergue below. The legend 'LEITH HALFPENNY' curves around the upper periphery, with a small asterisk visible to the left of the figure.
