Obverse lettering IOHN OF GAUNT DUKE OF LANCASTER. *
Reverse description A heraldic shield of arms occupies the central field, the upper edge of the shield notably intersecting the letters H and Y of the surrounding legend. The shield is rendered in the conventional armorial style characteristic of late 18th-century provincial token engraving. The circular legend, set in larger lettering than seen on related varieties, appears without a terminal period. The date 1794 is positioned in the lower exergual area beneath the shield, flanked by asterisks within the legend.
