Obverse description Facing crowned bust of Henry VIII in low relief, struck on a small irregular flan characteristic of hammered Tudor coinage. The king is depicted with a crown visible above his head, his face rendered in a stylised medieval portrait tradition with minimal detail. A beaded inner circle surrounds the central effigy. The abbreviated Latin legend, reading HENRIC DI GRA ROSA SIE SPIA (Henry, by the grace of God, Rose, without thorn), runs around the periphery in uncial letterforms interrupted by saltire stops.

Reverse description Long cross with three pellets in each of the four quarters, a design type inherited from medieval English coinage to facilitate cutting the coin into halves and quarters for small change. The field is plain with a beaded inner circle. The mint name legend CIVI TAS LON DON (City of London) is arranged in the four quadrants formed by the cross, lettered in uncial script with characteristic Tudor abbreviation and spacing.
