Reverse description The reverse is purely typographic in character, entirely devoid of pictorial ornament. The legend TO COMMEMORATE THE OPENING OF curves around the periphery, with the text THE SYDNEY RAILWAY displayed prominently across the centre field in bold raised Roman capitals. In the lower portion, the date 26TE SEPT. 1855. is inscribed, recording the historic inauguration of the Sydney Railway on 26 September 1855. A beaded border encircles the entire design.
