Obverse lettering SR. BEVOIS SOUTHAMPTON
Reverse description A crowned heraldic shield occupies the centre of the reverse field, displaying vertical lines in the upper half and a Tudor rose in the lower half, representing the arms of Southampton. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown rendered in fine relief. The circular legend PROMISSORY HALFPENNY 1791 runs around the periphery, with the date at the top and the denomination continuing around the sides. A milled border frames the entire design.
