Obverse description Draped bust of William Shakespeare facing left, rendered in low relief in the manner of a portrait medallion. The effigy shows the playwright with period costume, his hair falling loosely to the collar. The peripheral legend reads GULIELMUS SHAKESPEAR, disposed around the upper and lower field. The overall style is characteristic of late 18th-century English token engraving, with a somewhat crude but expressive rendering typical of evasion coinage of the period.
