| Obverse description | Draped bust of a pontifical figure facing right, closely modelled on the standard British regal halfpenny effigy but substituting a papal or ecclesiastical portrait. The legend GREGORY. III. PON. curves around the periphery, referencing Pope Gregory III in a deliberate evasion of the Royal Mint's copyright on genuine coinage. The bust is rendered in a relatively crude style typical of clandestine token manufacture of the period. |
