Obverse description Draped bust of a pontifical figure facing right, closely modelled on the standard British regal halfpenny effigy but substituting a papal or ecclesiastical portrait. The legend GREGORY. III. PON. curves around the periphery, referencing Pope Gregory III in a deliberate evasion of the Royal Mint's copyright on genuine coinage. The bust is rendered in a relatively crude style typical of clandestine token manufacture of the period.
Obverse script Latin

Reverse description Britannia seated to the left upon a rocky outcrop, holding a trident in her right hand and resting her left arm upon a shield adorned with the Union device. The date 1771 appears in the exergue below a ground line. The encircling legend BRITAIN RULES arcs around the upper field, a deliberate corruption of the patriotic phrase 'Britannia Rules' intended to circumvent legal restrictions on imitating official coinage.
