Reverse description A kookaburra, noted for its somewhat crude execution attributed to distortion introduced by the mechanical reducing process, is depicted perched upon a long, slender section of tree branch positioned horizontally across the field. The bird's distinctive silhouette is recognisable despite the loss of fine detail, and the design represents an early attempt to introduce distinctly Australian fauna onto the coinage. The encircling legend names the issuing territory and denomination in bold Latin capital letters disposed around the periphery of the square flan.
