| Reverse description | The quartered royal arms of Great Britain displayed on an ornate baroque shield, surmounted by a royal crown. The first and fourth quarters bear the three passant guardant lions of England; the second quarter displays the rampant lion of Scotland; the third quarter shows three fleurs-de-lis representing the claim to France; and the lower quarters feature the Irish harp and the Hanoverian horse respectively. The shield is framed by elaborate scrollwork cartouche. The Latin legend VIRGINIA arcs along the left periphery and the date 1773 appears at the upper right, together forming the encircling inscription VIRGINIA 1773. |
