Prince Edward Island issued its own copper coinage in 1858 largely because British halfpennies and American cents had flooded local circulation to the point where colonial commerce was genuinely disrupted by the inconsistency. The contract went to Heaton's Mint in Birmingham, which produced the entire series. PEI would strike just two more dated issues before Confederation absorbed the colony's currency authority in 1873.
The Breton 921 attribution places this firmly within the collector canon established by Raymond Breton's 1890 survey of Canadian colonial issues — still the foundational reference for this series.
