| Obverse description | Right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, executed in the classic portrait by Arnold Machin, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The bust is truncated at the shoulder and rendered in high relief against a polished proof field. The encircling legend reads ISLE OF MAN ELIZABETH II PM 1980, with the date and mint mark appearing at the lower right of the design. |

| Reverse description | A stylized Atlantic herring rendered in an interlaced Celtic knotwork design, occupying the majority of the reverse field. Two fish are depicted entwined in sinuous, decorative curves characteristic of Manx Celtic artistic tradition, their scales and fins rendered with fine detail. The denomination 1/2 is integrated into the composition within the interlaced knotwork, centrally placed among the coiling forms. The design is by engraver Leslie Lindsay and reflects the Isle of Man's historic association with the herring fishing industry. The plain edge and polished fields confirm proof execution. |
