| Obverse description | Central design featuring a crowned portcullis with chains, the gateway rendered with a grid of square openings and a row of downward-pointing battlements along the lower edge. A mintmark appears immediately above the portcullis in the upper field. The coin bears no surrounding legend, leaving the field plain on either side of the device. The design is characteristic of the small hammered halfpenny coinage of the seventh issue of Elizabeth I. |
