| Reverse description | Seated female figure of Liberty facing left, holding a liberty staff or scepter in her right hand and resting her left arm on a shield or orb at her side, consistent with the standard Connecticut copper reverse type. The legend INDE*ET* LIB* arcs across the upper field, with the date 1788 completing the inscription, all separated by asterisk stops. The design is struck on an irregular, planchet with visible lamination cracks, typical of the crude copper coinage of this period. The figure and shield are rendered in low, worn relief, consistent with the rudimentary die-cutting style of the New Haven Mint production. |
