| Obverse description | Mailed bust of a male figure facing left, wearing classical armour with a draped pauldron visible at the truncation. The head is adorned with a laurel wreath from which a distinctive upward-projecting horn or spike protrudes at the forehead, giving this variety its 'Horned Bust' designation. The hair is rendered in flowing locks beneath the wreath. The peripheral Latin legend AUCTORI* CONNECT* arcs around the bust, reading 'By the authority of Connecticut,' with pellet stops separating the abbreviated words. |

| Reverse description | A seated female figure, personifying Liberty or Independence, is depicted facing right in the center of the field, draped in classical robes. In her extended left hand she holds an olive branch, symbolizing peace, while her right hand grasps a long staff or scepter. A shield rests at her side. The date 1787 appears in the exergue below a ground line. The legend INDE ET LIB arcs along the left and right periphery, an abbreviation of the Latin 'Independentia et Libertas' (Independence and Liberty). |
