Obverse description Central field features an ornamental interlaced cypher of 'R & Co' (Roe and Company), surmounted by a domed beehive with bees in flight around it, symbolising industry and commerce. The legend MACCLESFIELD. R & Co arcs around the upper periphery. Multiple die varieties exist within this series, differentiated by minor details of the cypher and lettering arrangement.
