Dundee's commercial token issues of the mid-1790s emerged directly from the chronic shortage of regal copper that plagued Scottish trade throughout the decade — the Royal Mint's output was so inadequate that local merchants had little choice but to commission their own. W. Croom's issue is catalogued under three major reference systems, suggesting it circulated widely enough to attract consistent collector attention from the earliest days of token scholarship. Batty's numbering alone covers thousands of varieties, and landing at 3287 places this piece firmly within the dense provincial Scottish sequence.
