Additional information

Leopoldo II ruled Tuscany twice — the second time only because Austrian troops reinstated him after the revolutionary upheaval of 1848–49 expelled him from Florence. These late issues, struck between his restoration and the 1859 war that ended Habsburg influence in central Italy for good, represent the final years of a reign propped up by foreign bayonets. When Piedmontese forces moved south that year, Leopoldo abdicated without a fight and left for exile in Austria, ending three centuries of Medici and Habsburg-Lorraine rule over Tuscany.
