The Aryamehr title — meaning "Light of the Aryans" — was self-conferred by Mohammad Reza Shah in 1965 and incorporated into coinage from that point forward, a move that drew quiet ridicule from clerical opponents who viewed it as megalomaniacal posturing. That political overreach contributed directly to the climate that ended the Pahlavi dynasty altogether; coins bearing this title were struck only through early 1979, when the Islamic Revolution voided the entire imperial monetary series.
