Obverse description The obverse depicts the crowned and armoured figure of King Richard II standing full-face within the hull of a ship, holding a sword in his right hand and a shield of the royal arms of England (quartered with France) in his left. The ship's hull is rendered with considerable detail, showing the fore and stern castles, and the waves beneath. A beaded inner circle frames the central design, with the retrograde Latin legend running clockwise within the outer beaded border.
