| Obverse description | A large sailing vessel (nef) occupies the central field, depicted in the Gothic manner with elaborate rigging, furled sails, and a crowned shield of arms affixed to the hull. Two crowned figures are shown standing in the ship, each bearing a sword and a shield charged with the combined arms of the Habsburgs and the Burgundian Netherlands. A decorative rope border frames the inner field, and the entire composition is executed in the high-relief hammered style typical of late 15th-century Burgundian coinage. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial script reads: MO' × RO' × RE' × Z × PHI × ARDVC × AVS × BG' × BR' × CO' × HOL, identifying the coin as struck in the name of the King of the Romans and Philip, Archduke of Austria, Burgundy, Brabant, and Count of Holland. |
