Obverse description Crowned standing figure of John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, depicted facing front within a ship (nef), holding a sword erect in his right hand and a quartered heraldic shield bearing the arms of Burgundy and Flanders in his left. The hull of the vessel is adorned with a row of raised bosses, and the waves of the sea are rendered in stylized undulating lines below. Flanking the figure to left and right, additional heraldic shields are affixed to the sides of the ship. The entire composition is enclosed by a beaded inner circle, with the circumferential legend in Gothic uncial lettering reading: IOhS ⁑ DEI ⁑ G ⁑ DVX ⁑ BVRG ⁑ COM ⁑ z ⁑ DnS ⁑ FLAnD.
