Reverse description Persian legend reading 'sana 25 julus' distributed across the field in multiple lines, denoting regnal year 25 of Shah Alam II's reign. A stylized floral symbol is present in the field, consistent with Mughal numismatic convention. The strike is characteristic of provincial hammered workmanship, with an irregular planchet and no formal border.

Additional information

Chhatarpur was among the smaller Bundelkhand states that nominally acknowledged Mughal suzerainty well into the late eighteenth century, even as Mughal authority had effectively collapsed. Coins struck in Shah Alam II's name by such states were a political formality — the emperor's name conferred legitimacy, the local raja held actual power. By 1785, Shah Alam II was effectively a pensioner of the Marathas following the catastrophic defeat at Panipat in 1761.

The "Cf." designation in the KM reference signals this piece doesn't perfectly match any fully documented variety — likely a local die variant cut by a Chhatarpur engraver working from imprecise models.
