Additional information

Rajendra Bikram Shah's reign was defined less by his own authority than by the Thapa and Pande factions battling for regency control around him — he ascended the throne as a minor in 1816 and was eventually deposed and exiled to India by Jung Bahadur Rana in 1847. Coinage issued under his name spans that entire contested period, minted at Kathmandu under conditions where the nominal monarch held little actual power over state affairs, including the mint.
