Reverse description The reverse displays a large cross pattée occupying the majority of the field, its four arms dividing the surface into quadrants each containing a roundel or pellet device, characteristic of Portuguese moeda-type gold coinage of the period. An inner beaded or dotted border frames the central cross design. The circumferential legend IN • HOC • SIGNO • VINCES — meaning 'In this sign, thou shalt conquer' — encircles the design in Latin capitals with cross and pellet stops, a motto of Constantinian origin adopted by the Portuguese Crown. The flan is irregular and the strike variable in depth, as expected of hammered gold issues from the Lisbon mint in the reign of Afonso VI.
