| Obverse description | Hammered gold half-mithqal of irregular, slightly lobate flan, struck in the name of Shah Tahmasb I. The obverse field is occupied by a bold Arabic calligraphic legend in the Nasta'liq style reading the ruler's name and title 'Shah Tahmasb' together with the mint name Qazwin and the AH regnal date 959. The inscription is deeply incuse and fills the entire field, characteristic of Safavid hammered coinage of the mid-sixteenth century. No figural imagery is present, in accordance with the Twelver Shi'a religious orthodoxy of the dynasty. |
