Reverse description Central field bearing bold, crudely rendered Arabic script legend occupying the majority of the flan, identifying the mint of issue. The inscription reads 'zarb yanghissar', denoting struck at Yangi Hisar mint in Eastern Turkestan (Sinkiang). The script is executed in a fluid, somewhat angular style characteristic of locally produced hammered coinage, with the irregular flan edges and slightly convex surface typical of Qing-era Sinkiang provincial silver issues.

Additional information

Yangi Hisar was one of several Xinjiang mints hastily reactivated in the aftermath of the Qing reconquest of the Tarim Basin, following Zuo Zongtang's campaign against Yaqub Beg's Kashgaria. The "Yuan Nian" — first year — designation places this piece at the very opening of Guangxu's reign, a moment when Qing administrative control over the region was still being reasserted mint by mint. Local silver coinage of this type circulated alongside Russian and Central Asian issues, the province's monetary situation reflecting its geographic position at the edge of Chinese authority.

The "var." designation against Y#A7.14 suggests die differences not yet fully catalogued — unsurprising given the improvised nature of these provincial strikes.
