Obverse description Central square void surrounded by four Chinese ideograms arranged in a cruciform reading pattern, to be read top to bottom and right to left. The characters are rendered in a relatively crude, hand-engraved style consistent with provincial hammered coinage of the period. The field is plain with no border ornamentation. The legend identifies the Guangxu Emperor and denotes the denomination as a silver coin.
