| Obverse description | The central field bears the crowned Portuguese royal arms, depicting the escutcheon of Portugal with its characteristic quinas (five bezants arranged in a cross) at centre, surrounded by a bordure of castles, the entire shield surmounted by a royal crown. The arms are enclosed within an ornate cartouche. A circular Latin legend surrounds the device reading JOANNES.D.G.PORT.P.REGENS.TE.GUINEAE., invoking João as Prince Regent of Portugal by the grace of God, with the title extending to Guinea. The design is rendered in the neoclassical colonial style characteristic of the Lisbon Mint's production for Portuguese Africa. |
