| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned Gothic letter L within a shield-shaped cartouche, the crown rendered in typical late medieval style with fleurs. A dolphin motif appears at lower right within the shield, referencing the Dauphine province. The design is contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend in uncial Latin script reads LVDOVICVS FRAnCOR BEN, identifying Louis XII as King of the French. |

| Additional information |
Louis XII's acquisition of Dauphiné was inherited through the French crown rather than conquest — the province had been ceded to France in 1349 by Humbert II, who sold his title to fund a crusade that never materialized. Coins struck for Dauphiné retained their provincial identity throughout Louis's reign, a political accommodation that kept regional administrations cooperative during his expensive Italian campaigns.
The Ciani gap is notable. Issues this small in billon tend to survive in poor condition, which may explain incomplete documentation in older references.
