Leopold Anton von Firmian governed Salzburg from 1727 until his death in 1744, but his tenure is defined above all by the Salzburger Exil of 1731–32, in which he expelled roughly 20,000 Protestant subjects from the archbishopric in the dead of winter — one of the largest forced religious migrations of the 18th century. This tiny silver piece circulated through an economy simultaneously losing a substantial portion of its labor force to that expulsion, with many artisans and farmers among those driven out into Prussia and beyond.
