Obverse description Central shield bearing the Basel crozier (episcopal staff), enclosed within a four-lobed quatrefoil ornamental frame with decorative trefoil terminals at each lobe junction. The shield and quatrefoil are rendered in high relief with fine Gothic detail. The circumferential Latin legend is divided by cross pattée stops and reads MONETA NO VRBIS BASILIENSIS, identifying the coin as a new issue of the city of Basel. The coin is struck on a broad, slightly irregular flan with a beaded border.
