Obverse description Two standing figures face one another across a central staff or gonfalon: at left, the Doge Michele Steno in ducal robes and horned corno ducale, and at right, Saint Mark the Evangelist with nimbus, presenting the banner of Venice to the Doge. The figures are rendered in the flat, hieratic style characteristic of Venetian medieval hammered coinage. A beaded inner border frames the composition, with the abbreviated Latin legend disposed around the periphery.
