Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — reigned during one of the most politically fraught pontificates of the seventeenth century, locked in open conflict with Louis XIV over Gallicanism and the right of asylum in Rome. Papal finances were under chronic strain, partly funding resistance to Ottoman expansion; the relief of Vienna in 1683 was achieved in no small part through Odescalchi's organizational pressure on the Holy League. Small silver fractions like this one were the workhorse of Roman street commerce throughout that turbulence.
The NOCET MINVS designation with narrow arms distinguishes this die variety from the broader-armed issues catalogued separately in Muntoni.
