Additional information

Alexander II ruled Moldavia twice, his second reign beginning in 1449 after ousting Bogdan II — a dynastic struggle that characterized nearly every succession in medieval Moldavia. This half groschen belongs to that second period, a time when the principality was caught between competing pressures from Poland, Hungary, and an increasingly aggressive Ottoman expansion into the Balkans. The Type II designation distinguishes it from his earlier issues, reflecting a modification to the die work made within a reign that lasted only six years total.
