Obverse description A rampant lion passant to sinister, rendered in high relief, is displayed at the centre of the field within a six-lobed inner circle. The lion's mane, claws, and tail are finely articulated in the Gothic heraldic style typical of late 13th-century Hainaut coinage. A beaded inner border separates the central device from the surrounding circumferential legend. The outer legend reads IOhANnЄS: COMЄS: hANONIЄ, identifying John, Count of Hainaut, and is introduced by a cross pommée. The coin's flan is irregular, as characteristic of hammered medieval silver.

Reverse description A short cross pattee with plain arms divides the reverse field into four quarters, each quarter containing a six-petalled rosette or triangular florette in relief, giving the design a distinctive decorative character. The central cross is contained within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, separated from the central motif by the beaded border, reads MOnЄTA: VALЄNChЄNЄnSIS, denoting the mint city of Valenciennes, and is introduced by a cross pommée. The overall composition reflects the Flemish-influenced gros tradition of the late 13th century. The flan edge is irregular, consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage.
