Obverse description Central field depicts a rampant lion to the left, rendered in high relief in the Gothic style typical of early 14th-century Brabantine coinage, representing the heraldic lion of Brabant. The lion is shown with detailed mane and claws, set within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded ring. The surrounding legend in uncial Gothic lettering reads IOhAnnES DVX BRABAnTIE, identifying Duke John II of Brabant as issuer, introduced by a cross pattee.
