Additional information

Philip the Handsome was just five years old in 1483, the year his father Maximilian of Habsburg assumed regency over the Burgundian Netherlands following Mary of Burgundy's fatal riding accident. Coins issued under his nominal authority during this period reflect the administrative continuity maintained by Maximilian, who carefully preserved the established monetary framework of the duchy to consolidate his shaky political hold over the Flemish and Brabantine towns.

The "M" on this issue almost certainly references the Mechelen mint, active under Maximilian's regency administration.
