In each quarter alternating eagles displayed and rampant lions are placed, reflecting the heraldic arms of the County of Flanders and its associated territories. The cross intersects the surrounding circular legend, which is rendered in uncial Gothic script. The overall composition follows the standard Flemish gros format of the early fourteenth century. |
